Community Resources The holidays are quickly approaching. When we think of the holiday season, we often associate these times with joy and family celebration. Throw in some stress, overeating, and family conflict, and you have the stereotypical holiday celebration! However, the holidays can also be a painful reminder of lost loved ones and the struggles that life brings. Many people struggle with grief, financial hardship, depression, and countless other issues. Special occasions tend to put a spotlight on these struggles. Fortunately, there is help available. Richland County has a number of resources to help people through tough times. First Call of Richland County is a great place to start. I have called many times to get information on food pantries, help with bills, clothing needs, housing questions, etc. The staff is incredibly helpful and friendly. Non-Traditional Career Exploration Days at Pioneer Non-Traditional days are coming up soon! There have been announcements this past week about another opportunity to visit Pioneer. This is one that I am pretty excited about! The trip taken by the entire 8 th grade includes quick visits to many different programs. This does not give much time for students to ask questions and get a real sense of what Pioneer can offer them. Non-traditional days give students the opportunity to spend an entire day at Pioneer. On December 10th, boys can get a closer look at the Health programs, Performing Arts Academy, Culinary Arts, Cosmetology Lab, Horticulture Lab, and Graphic Arts. On December 2nd, girls can get a closer look at Carpentry, Auto Technology, Computer Aided Drafting and Design, Industrial Electricity, IT Support, Masonry, Precision Machining, and Welding. This is an all-day career event for eighth grade students. They will ride to and from Pioneer on Lexington buses. Lunch i

Grade Cards It is that time again! The 2 nd six weeks is officially over. Grade cards will be coming home tomorrow, November 21 st . Grade cards can be great news, or they can start difficult conversations. For students who struggle and have to work hard to see success, nightly homework and grades can lead to arguments. This is not fun for anyone. Here are some ideas that may help: ·          Set aside structured time each evening for homework. ·          If your student says they forgot it, or it is at school, bring them back for it. During athletic seasons the building is typically open. ·          When setting goals for your child, short term is best. Make it a manageable, weekly goal. Junior High students do not tend to be long term planners, so focusing on the next grade card might not have the desired effect. ·          Try a reward, instead of a consequence.   ·          When checking grades for improvement, focus on the %, not the letter grade. A student

8th Grade Pioneer Trip The 8 th grade students recently visited Pioneer Career & Technology Center. This is a trip we take every year.   Pioneer has 28 different programs students can complete during their Junior and Senior years of high school. Many of these programs include licensing/certification for future careers. Others offer college credit that provide students a head start in their chosen profession. Pioneer has something for everyone. Check out the link below to take a look at all of the available programs and to become more familiar with what Pioneer has to offer.
