Yesterday in 8th Grade Science classes, the High School Counselors and I spent some time trying to explain to students how you earn credits in high school.  It is a valuable reminder for everyone. High school is different than elementary and junior high.  In junior high, you take classes and each year you move on to the next grade and take all the classes for that grade.  In high school, you must earn credits for specified classes and you earn credit each time you pass a class. So, for example, all students must earn 4 credits of English to graduate.  When you pass English 9 during your freshman year, you move on to English 10 during your sophomore year.  If, unfortunately, you failed English 9 then you are going to have to make that up before you can progress on to English 10.  Students who fail a class will be able to make up the course either by repeating the class over the summer or by retaking it during your sophomore year.  The bottom line is...

Attention Students and Parents: This year, we are offering a Pre-College planning meeting for 8th and advanced 7th grade students. This meeting will take place at 6:30 in the HS auditorium, Feb 6th. This meeting will cover many of the new terms you will hear as you begin to develop a plan for high school and college courses.  We hope to see you there!

College Credit Plus In addition to the wide range of courses that are available at LHS, there are other academic options available to our students. The College Credit Plus (CC+) program is an opportunity for students to take college courses. This program has replaced what used to be called Dual Enrollment and PSEO. This new program is available to 7th and 8th grade students. However, it is essential that students must be college ready. This means they would have to have taken the ACT and will need to be accepted into the college. Students are still able to go to the college campus to take classes or take classes with LHS teachers that will give you college credit. There are a lot of details involved in participating in the CC+ program and students must notify Mr. Secrist or their counselor before April 1st to indicate their intent to participate in the CC+ program in the following school year. HIGH SCHOOL Tomorrow is the big day! Scheduling for High School! It probably seems like we just started this school year, and we are already talking about the next! I will be in 8th grade Science classes all day tomorrow. We will discuss course requirements and electives for next year's Freshman class! Your student will come home with a High School Registration form, Curriculum guide, a letter from the High School counselors, and possibly, a summer PE form. I realize this is a lot of information! Do not be overwhelmed - most likely, everything you need to know can be found in the curriculum guide. I have also attached the PowerPoint I use in my presentation with the students. The registration forms will require signatures from any music teachers and possibly math, if your student is in the Enriched track. Requirements to Pass We are now in week two of the 4 th six week grading period. The fourth is special. The 4 th six weeks determines if a student is in danger of failing, or not. All of these requirements can be found in the handbook, but I thought now was the perfect time to review them. Minimum grades required to pass any course: To pass any full year course:   At least 3 points must be earned for the entire year, and   At least 2 points must be earned the second semester. To pass any semester course: A passing grade must be earned in at least two of the three marking periods. Points are earned using the following scale: A = 4 points B = 3 points C = 2 points D = 1 point F = 0 points It is worth noting that Lexington High School standards are more rigid than these. Graduation Requirements Do you know what is required to graduate from high school? In all honesty, the answer is probably “no.” The graduation requirements have been a work in process for those students who are in the Class of 2018 and beyond. Last month, the state provided information that spells out what current freshman and beyond must successfully do in order to graduate with a high school diploma. I will be honest, perhaps it is just bec ause it is a change, but it is not necessarily easy to understand at first glance. My goal is to help make sure that you know and understand what you will need to do to graduate. This is important information to become familiar with, because high school is right around the corner!
