Homework Hangups

Homework, homework, and more homework!

Let me tell you a story. A student is sitting in class. They are paying attention, actively listening, participating, and asking questions. They are the model student and everything is clicking. That same student goes home, opens up their agenda, creates a plan for completing that night’s homework, and gets to work. The most unusual thing happens – the student has completely forgotten how to do it! Earlier in the day it made perfect sense, now it is a mystery.
How did this happen?
What do I do now?
My teacher is not here to help?
This is a common problem that causes moments of panic and frustration in homes all over Lexington! Here are some tips to get past that moment of panic and get that homework done.

  • Connect ED                THE BEST PLACE FOR MATH HELP! Your math textbook has an online version. This website is the perfect place to refresh your memory and understanding of the day’s math lesson. It offers notes, tutorials, online practice and more. Take advantage of this!
  • Khan Academy          This website offers help with multiple subject areas. You will be able to view tutorials and lessons on a number of different topics. I could see this being most helpful in Science and Math.
  • Use those notes you were so diligently taking.
  • If you have a textbook, use it! Look at examples and use paragraph headings to find answers more quickly.
So many times, when this moment of frustration hits, people freeze. Students want to be able to complete their work with no trouble at all. Sadly, it does not always work like that. When this happens it is necessary to put in extra effort to get it done. Use the resources that are available to you. In the end, you will have a better understanding of the material because in the process of doing your homework – you also studied!
