This will be my last post before we return in August! The last few weeks have been spent working on schedules, lockers, and all kinds of tasks to prepare for the upcoming school year. I have a feeling it is going to be a good one! Each year I talk to the students about kindness. I always emphasize being kind, not nice. Nice can be faked, it is often a series of meaningless words. Kindness can not be faked. One is either kind, or not kind. Kindness is action. Kindness is inconvenient. This is something I personally strive for on a daily basis. This is difficult, I fail often. But failure does not mean you quit trying. I ran across an article recently about how to teach kids kindness. Take a few minutes to read it and set some goals for the summer. If you want to do more with this, there are a lot of resources online involving kindness (summer kindness bucket list, acts of kindness challenge, etc). You never know the impact it may have. Are You Raising Nice Kids? Have a great sum...

Summer Lunches!       We know that statistically, many students, without having school lunches available during the summer, do go hungry. Thankfully, there are people out there who want to help.   All children ages 1 through 18 are eligible to receive free meals during the summer months at participating program sites. Individuals ages 19 through 21 who have been identified as having mental or physical disabilities and are following Individualized Education Programs (IEPs ) through their current enrollment in educational programs, also are eligible for free summer meals.   Here is a link provided by ODE with information on where the free meals can be obtained as well as a phone number for more information (1-866-3-HUNGRY). There are 6 free meal sites located in Mansfield as well as in neighboring communities such as Crestline, Galion and Mt. Vernon.   http://education.ohio.gov/Topics/Other-Resources/Food-and-Nutrition/Summer-F...

I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend! Time is ticking away on the 2014-2015 school year. As the days get shorter the to-do list seems to get longer and longer! It has been a solid month since I posted last! So... it is time I do some catching up! This is going to be a long post, so get yourself a beverage and get comfortable! Academic Awards Night Congratulations to every student who was honored last week at our Academic Awards. We have so many amazing students at Lexington that it is easy to take it for granted. I am incredibly proud and thankful to be a part of this school and the lives of these students. Parents, whatever you are doing, keep it up! Spring Dance We had the final dance of the year last Friday. Students were encouraged to dress in their best 80's ensemble and dance the afternoon away. I wish all of the parents could have seen what the students came up with. The slouch socks, neon, and big bangs were out in full force! Even the teachers got into i...

WILL POWER!!! The time has come to rally around one of our Lexington families! William Schaefer was recently diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. This is a  type of cancer of the lymph nodes. He is currently receiving chemotherapy to cure this cancer and has a 4-6 month battle ahead of him to conquer the lymphoma.  Will is doing well and wants to thank all of you for the thoughts, prayers and support. One way to continue to support Will and others who have or had Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma is to wear Flourescent green on Friday!!  Will's cancer fighting slogan is WILL POWER!!   I also want to share with you a fundraiser in support of William and the LAMPSTRONG Foundation. A t-shirt has been designed to show support to William in his fight against Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. The proceeds from the sale of t-shirts will go to the LampStrong Foundation. This was founded by Matt Lampson who is a goalie with the Columbus Crew...

Procrastination   is one of the more common problem areas that students battle. Every year I meet some students who are "master procrastinators." The reality is that some people don't mind putting everything off until the last possible second and then working like crazy to get everything accomplished before the deadline, but this can result in a lot of unnecessary stress. Procrastination certainly doesn't mean that you are lazy or incapable, but it is often a sign that something is getting in your way of completing your tasks and responsibilities. If you are interested in learning strategies for gaining control over your tendencies to procrastinate, it is important to remember that there are no quick fixes. As with most things in life, what works for one person will not necessarily work for someone else so it is important to find a strategy that will work effectively for  you . I doubt that any of these suggestions will be ideas that you have never heard of bef...
